Choosing a Professional Trading Broker

If you are looking for the best broker for professional traders, sometimes you might feel like the world has forgotten about you. You hear all the time about the best trading brokers for beginners or the best tradingview brokers but you’re probably wondering: ‘Well I’ve been trading for over 10 years now, what are the best brokers for professional traders like me?

Luckily, we haven’t left you out, here is a full breakdown of the best brokers for professional traders in the UK.

TLDR: Choose IG if you are looking for a professional stock broker or Direct Market Access (DMA). Choose Pepperstone if you are looking to trade high-volumes / have a large account size. Choose Interactive Brokers If you are looking to trade options or looking for Python / API integrations. Choose CMC’s Spectre product if you are looking for spread betting tax-efficiency without leverage.

What are the best brokers for professionals?

According to our research and hands-on testing, the best overall broker for professional traders in the UK is IG.

The top 3 brokers are:

  1. IG
  2. Pepperstone
  3. Interactive Brokers

IG leads the pack with the most instruments, a dedicated L2 Dealer (DMA platform), professional trading tools on ProRealTime and integrations with MetaTrader.

Pepperstone leads for the best high-volume trading account with their Razor account.

Interactive Brokers leads for options trading and Python / API integrations.

Noteworthy: CMC Markets leads for tax-efficiency with their Spectre product.

Experienced traders need: tight spreads, a wide range of things to trade, taxation optionality (spread betting options), and highly-regulated trading environments.

They also need pro tooling, access to pertinent data and multiple platform options.

For a lot of these options there are only three real choices – IG, Pepperstone and Interactive Brokers.

Here’s why…

Pros

  • FCA-regulated for maximum safety.
  • Low spreads starting at 0.5 pips.
  • Offers both MT4 and TradingView.
  • L2 Dealer & ProRealTime Platforms

Cons

  • No Semi-Pro, Commission-Only Account Type
  • Platform might be too tricky for beginners

Why is IG the Best Professional Broker?

IG excels in the following areas:

  • Market Range: Over 16,000+ instruments.
  • Platform Variety: ProRealTime (advanced charting), L2 Dealer (their DMA platform), MetaTrader, TradingView and WebTrader platform options.
  • Pro Account Type: Forex Direct account type for low fees and direct DMA access.

IG is best for the professional trader who may need to trade a wide range of instruments: options, forex and stock CFDs and ETFs. Professional traders tend to gravitate towards IG not only for their market range but also their great customer support, clean trading platforms and their regulation (IG Group is publicly-traded in the UK).

IG Professional Account Application Screen

The drawbacks with IG are that they do not offer a commission-only account or a commission + small spread option like Pepperstone or Vantage Markets, where the base spread cost is 0.0 pips and they instead charge a small commission, this would have made IG far and away the winner here, but as this is not an option it actually precludes a lot of ‘semi-pro’ traders who need low spreads and commission only when trading high-volume.

IG’s Platforms & Accounts for Professionals

IG offers several account types and platforms. Some options for professional traders include:

  • TradingView: Building automated trading strategies in TradingView has become more common amongst professional traders and is a way traders can use IG to create pro strategies. This is however, more restrictive than using Python on Interactive Brokers (IB).
  • ProRealTime: Pro Real Time is IG’s professional platform offering and it’s extremely good. From viewing options data, to advanced charting, there is plenty for professional traders to get their teeth into.
  • L2 Dealer: L2 Dealer and by extension, Forex Direct, is really IG’s core professional offering. It offers a lot of advantages including direct market access (DMA) for real-time pricing with no dealing desk. You can think of it kind of like a ‘Bloomberg-lite’.

If you are looking for a breakdown of what ProRealTime offers, you can check out the video below or you can see our screenshots showing the platform up-close and personal.

My Experience

Given we’ve already reviewed IG on TradingView, so here’s what we experienced when testing ProRealTime. At first glance, it didn’t look too different to other platforms we’ve tested (we opened the Web version), but we quickly got prompted to download ProRealTime Complete, this is their actual platform with all the advanced features.

It’s odd there were two platforms, but we pressed ahead and downloaded it. So our first lesson was this: Don’t use their web version. Download the ProRealTime Complete when prompted to choose.

ProRealTime - IG's Platform in July 2026
ProRealTime Web Version – Basic Features & Functionality

When we explored their ProRealTime Complete, we saw the difference immediately. However, it was a bit tricky trying to get into it. After downloading it (see screenshot below), we opened the downloaded application, and it said ‘Open Your Broker Account’ so, we then had to go back to the MyIG page click launch ProRealTime again from the MY IG section and then click the little text that says ‘Already Downloaded‘ on the page where we just downloaded the application! This was hardly a smooth process….

Download Prompt for ProRealTime Complete
Download Prompt for ProRealTime Complete

Once we were in we saw why this was one of the leading trading platforms for UK professional traders. They offer options chain data, technical overlays and a range of different options to review potential trades. At first glance it may just look like an older version of TradingView – the platform feels very Windows 95. But I was quickly proven wrong…

ProRealTime Complete with 5 Windows Including Options Chain
ProRealTime Complete with 5 Windows Including Options Chain

The best thing we found was the ‘Display’ drop down. Now, if you are really looking for the difference between ProRealTime and TradingView, this is it. ProRealTime has options chain data, order flow data, client sentiment and ProScreener – all of these features make ProRealTime much more detailed and in-depth than TradingView and despite the drawbacks – slow loading speed (bringing up or minimising screens took at least 5 seconds), 5+ windows instead of one clean window, the web version differing from the downloaded version, despite all of that… it was actually one of my favourite platforms.

IG ProRealTime Display features
IG ProRealTime Display features

Key point of note: The platform itself acts more as a series of overlays on your computer so in reality there are like 5 windows, it’s not one clean window so that’s something to bear in mind. you have to minimise the top navigation bar, not the individual navigation bars as you only close one screen…

Key Professional FAQs for IG

Is ProRealTime Worth it?

In our view, yes. ProRealTime is relatively inexpensive (£30 a month) which is actually slightly cheaper than TradingView’s Plus plan (see below) in 2026. The benefits are different, as mentioned, but ProRealTime is worth the investment for professional traders looking for order book data, options data, and advanced charting tools. It’s a little slower than TradingView and you will have to download ProRealTime Complete to get the full features but given the roughly equal price in 2026, ProRealTime is worth it’s weight in gold, just for the Order Book data alone.

Is IG good for professional traders?

Absolutely, IG offers 16,000+ instruments, a great native webtrader, ProRealTime and L2 Dealer (their DMA platform). They do not however, have a commission-only or spread-reduced account like Pepperstone’s Razor account or CNC’s FXActive – so you will have to either apply for a Professional account or work with the standard account. If you have a larger lot size but do not yet qualify for a professional account we recommend choosing Pepperstone.

Is IG better than Pepperstone for Professional Traders?

Not necessarily. IG offers ProRealTime which anyone can access, including semi-professional traders, to get access to order flow data and options data which is a definite advantage. But, the range of account types on IG does not extend to a commission-only account which would otherwise reduce the cost of trading for semi-professional traders. They only offer a standard CFD account, spread betting account and their professional accounts (with L2 Dealer & Forex Direct access). This is a gap that Pepperstone fills, if you don’t yet qualify for a ‘Professional’ account or simply do not want to give up the protections, then Pepperstone’s Razor account is better suited.

Is IG better than CMC for Professional Traders?

Yes, IG is better than CMC for Professional Traders. Whilst CMC has it’s advantages such as rebates for professional traders, the platform options like advanced charting can be met with IG’s ProRealTime which is open to professional and semi-professional traders, and IG also offers DMA access with their L2 Dealer platform which is better for professionals. However, once again, IG doen’t provide a commission-only option for higher volume / larger lot size trading like CMC’s FXActive so CMC might be better suited for that kind of trader.

2. Pepperstone: Best High-Volume Professional Broker

Best High-Volume Broker

Pepperstone: Great Overall Professional Broker for High-Volume Trading

Pepperstone remains a stalwart of professional traders, scalpers and those looking for tight spreads, institutional liquidity and forex trading excellence.

73-89% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading on margin with this provider.

Pros

  • Widest free platform offering
  • Advanced fee structure with Razor Account
  • Accessible without going through Pro account

Cons

  • No DMA access like IG

Why is Pepperstone a good broker for professional traders?

We’ve already established that Pepperstone has the best commission-only account spreads in our CMC, IG or Pepperstone video. This account type is perfect for scalpers, high-volume traders and those looking to access seriously low spreads and who may not qualify for a full professional account yet.

So here’s our take on where they are best: Pepperstone is the the best broker for professional forex trading in the UK for traders looking to trade on large account sizes / high-volume, due to the Razor account spreads, spread betting options, and multiple trading platform options. It’s best-suited to trader with 3-5 years of trading experience, who care about spread costs, taxation and platform variety.

Our view is that Pepperstone suits a wider range of professsional-level traders than IBKR, IG, Exness and others. The reason is simple… You are not walled-off to some professional requirements section to access their tight spreads – instead they are available to everyone through a Razor account. This is completely different to some other brokers on this list where you need to hurdle a certain benchmark to get access to tighter spreads.

Pepperstone's Transparent Pricing & Razor Spreads

So let’s dive into their Professional offering. What does Pepperstone excel at, and why is it one of the best brokers for professional traders:

  • Automation & Platform Options: cTrader, TradingView, MetaTrader – these are common names in the trading space, and for good reason. All offer automation capabilities and for professional traders the ability to automate trading is critical.
  • Razor Spreads: Tight spreads are often the domain of professional accounts only, but Pepperstone offers something exceptional here. They provide tight spreads starting from 0.0 pips on their Razor account type and only charge a £2.25 each-way commission).
  • Transparent Pricing: Best of all, they are super transparent about the pricing of spreads and their fees. Ultimately, if you are not happy or find cheaper fees elsewhere, you can always switch brokers (we haven’t yet and it’s been years!). This is great for professional traders who are serious about their spread costs.

My Experience

So what’s it like actually trading on Pepperstone, especially on their Razor account which is our preferred low-cost professional account type for high volume? Well, in short, it’s incredible. We tested both the cTrader and TradingView account. Trading with Pepperstone on TradingView with a custom Pinescript strategy is best done on the Razor account.

I got seemless execution, I’m not surprised by price as the 0.0 pip spreads on EURUSD entered me exactly where i thought, and overall, this was a dream for my scalping strategy.

Pepperstone's Razor Account with TradingView Strategy
Pepperstone’s Razor Account with TradingView Strategy

We also tried cTrader and creating cBots in C# feels a bit outdated nowadays, given how much Python dominates the trading and coding landscape, but the benefit is clear.

C# is one of the most widely-used programming languages, and AI bots like Claude or ChatGPT had no issues creating a quick trading strategy to test. Now would I say it’s 100% foolproof, no. Like any automated strategy extreme caution should be used.

However, for professionals who like coding or tweaking their own code having both PineScript MQL, C# all as potential automation options – that’s something to really shout about.

Key Professional Trading FAQs for Pepperstone

Does Pepperstone have a DMA?

No, Pepperstone does not offer Direct Market Access (DMA) in any account. They instead provide accessible professional-grade spreads through their Razor account where you pay 0.0 pip spreads on CFDs and a £2.25 each-way commission. This makes their professional offering the most accessible in the UK.

How many instruments can I trade on Pepperstone?

Pepperstone claims 2,700+ instruments on their Razor account. Whilst not the largest, they specialise in Forex trading with tight Razor spreads for professionals.

Is Pepperstone better than IG for professionals?

Pepperstone is better than IG for commission-only spread accounts. There is no gated access for tight spreads, their Razor spread account provides the tightest commission only spreads we’ve seen (see our full FXActive vs Razor account test). IG excels in proprietary platforms like ProRealTime and for DMA access (L2 Dealer) as well as having a larger instrument range. However, IG only has Standard, Spread Betting and Pro accounts, there is no account for high-volume non-professional acount types, that’s where Pepperstone excels. For professional traders who might not qualify for a full ‘pro’ account, Pepperstone’s Razor account is the best option.

Why is Pepperstone good for professionals?

Pepperstone is great for professionals / more experienced traders because they offer Razor spreads (strting from 0.0 pips and a £2.25 each-way commission) this is cheaper than CMC’s FXActive account which charges £2.50 each-way, and IG doesn’t provide this option. They also offer multiple trading platforms to choose from all with algorithmic trading options (apart from the Pepperstone Platform), they offer spread betting accounts, and there is no ‘gated’ permission to access their professional / tight spreads.

3. Interactive Brokers: Best for Options and Automation

If you are looking for a broker that offers Python as the main coding language, has options trading available and a great professional platform, then Interactive Brokers is right up there with the best trading platforms.

Best for Python & Options Platform

Interactive Brokers: Best Options & Python Broker

Interactive Brokers remains a leader in the field for professional traders. They are a leading options broker, offer python trading through TWS and might be one of the best brokers hands-down.

Pros

  • Tight spreads starting from 0.0 pips
  • FCA-regulated for maximum safety.
  • Low spreads starting at 0.5 pips.
  • Offers both MT4 and MT5 support.
  • Great educational resources for beginners

Cons

  • Smaller range of instruments compared to IG or CMC

Why Interactive Brokers a good professional platform?

IB offers UK traders access to thousands of instruments, detailed options trading, and two account types (fixed fee and tiered volume-based trading). All of these factors, in addition to the TWS platform, make IB a great broker. Howevere, there are a couple of issues we noticed. TWS is generally quite slow compared to IG’s ProRealTime and the fees on their fixed rate pricing model were not as competitive as Pepperstone.

Interactive Brokers Fixed Commission Accounts & Tiered Volume Based Trading Account
Interactive Brokers Fixed Commission Accounts & Tiered Volume Based Trading Account

Besides being one of the only brokers to offer Python integration support, enabling quantitative trading strategies , and being one of the most regulated brokers in the UK, Interactive Brokers also offers TWS (Trader workstation) which is a Pro-level platform, that unlike IG, doesn’t require meeting a professional bar to access.

Trader Workstation, otherwise known as TWS, is a leading UK trading platform offered by Interactive Brokers and is considered one of the best professional trading platforms with live news, options data & trading (see below), and detailed stock data.

Trading Options on IBKR

Now, it has several hallmarks similar to the IG ProRealTime account we tried, such as opening multiple windows when starting up. But it opened a news section called Daily Lineup, which contained all the useful information that news-based traders care about (see screenshot below). This platform also included IBKR Prediction markets – which you can see below. It’s no surprise seeing as Interactive Brokers is the largest options broker in the UK.

My Experience

Here’s how we placed a trade on IB on their web platform.

Typing an Instrument into IB is fundamentally Different to Most other Broker Platforms
Typing an Instrument into IB is fundamentally Different to Most other Broker Platforms

Interactive Brokers feels different… you start on their web platform and type in an instrument, you can also acess this via the ‘Trade’ button on the right hand side. Then enter the stock or instrument you want to trade and you are taken to the chart view (see screenshot below).

TESLA Trade on Interactive Brokers Web Trader
TESLA Trade on Interactive Brokers Web Trader

You then place a trade using the panel underneath. No clutter, no other instruments in focus. It’s minimalist and clean. But honestly, if you are reading this you probably want to know what TWS is like for professionals… Well here is is.

Trading Google on IBKR's TWS

IBKR feels well, more modern than IG’s ProRealTime platform, but definitely lacking the deep charting abilities of IG’s ProRealTime. Now, where it excels is the live market data & news-based events that it shows regularly. But TWS was heavy – it took up so much disk space when running i had to restart it several times. IG provides a much lighter and less resource intensive Pro platforms and are equally as comprehensive for news & data.

So for professional traders TWS, offered by Interactive Brokers offers the following advantages:

  • Great news-focused platform for news / event-based trading.
  • Python-based trading option via API.
  • European-style options trading natively.

For fees, IB has two different fees systems, a volume-based (tiered) model and a fixed commission model (see below).

They charge 0.05% – 0.10% of the trade value on the fixed commission plan and up to 0.015% on the maximum trade value size (£400,000,000+). This % based model makes it hard to weigh up directly with IG & Pepperstone who operate more on a pip + commission model. But overall Pepperstone, with 0.0 pip spreads and £2.25 each-way commission would come up to far smaller than IB’s 0.05% of £100,000 (£5000).

What is Interactive Brokers best for?

IB is best for experienced professionals looking for options trading, Python-based trading and live news-based trading. The fee structure can be prohibitive depending on your volume, so keep an eye on the costs.

How many instruments can I trade on Interactive Brokers UK?

There are no public figures available but Interactive Brokers claims that their AI screener can ran 70,000+ instruments, and IB themselves claim to have 170+ global markets available. So safe to say, it’s a lot.

Is IB better than IG for professional traders in the UK?

IG is generally a better choice. They are a UK-based company first and foremost, offer spread betting options, transparently say they offer 16,000+ instruments to trade, offer L2 Dealer (DMA) and ProRealTime platforms. IB is better for options trading and Python-based trading.

How to Choose a Professional Trading Platform / Broker?

If you are looking for a professional trading platform then you will need to ask the following questions:

  1. Regulation: This is a given, they must be FCA-regulated in the UK.
  2. Account Types: Look for fixed commission-based account types, as % based and spread-based account fees add up over time.
  3. Automation Tooling: Look for brokers that integrate with platforms that enable automation like Pepperstone, or natively have automation like IB.
  4. Fees: As with account type, fees are extremely important when considering trading large volume.
  5. Pro Account ‘Benefits’: Benefits like DMA, advanced charting platforms, free tools and perks like rebates (as CMC offers) and more should come with professional accounts.

Given this, we have ranked our best professional platforms / brokers for UK traders as follows:

What other brokers are best for professionals?

For this research, we reviewed IG, Interactive Brokers, Pepperstone, Vantage Markets, CMC Markets, Saxo Bank, Trading 212, eToro and other brokers that either offer ‘Pro’ level account types, offer ECN and DMA-level access for traders. Only IG, Pepperstone, Interactive Brokers and CMC Markets met our detailed criteria as professional brokers.

One notable mention was CMC Markets, they offer a Spectre account – which is a tax-free trading vehicle that avoids capital gains tax through spread betting classification. So if you are looking for a spread betting account for professionals then our best spread betting brokers guide should help you decide there.

It’s important to note that this list is not a comprehensive list of all professional brokers, it is our curated view of the best brokers for professionals based on market range, fees, spreads, ECN & DMA access and platforms.

Other considerations

This list is the best professional brokerage accounts that you can access as a retail trader. Be aware that professional trader status in the UK often requires a portfolio size of £500,000+ and that certain FCA-requirements are waived by trading on these accounts. They are not suitable for the vast majority of traders and extreme caution should be used when trading these account types, for more detail check the FCA guidance on professional trading accounts.

FAQ’s

What is the best broker for professional traders?

In our research, we found IG to offer the best mix for professional traders including DMA access & pro tooling. However, Pepperstone was the best for automation (excluding Python automation) and account types given their Razor account. Pepperstone is best for high-volume professional trading. Interactive Brokers was the best for automated trading using Python, trading options, and their TWS platform was great for live market data.

What qualifies as a professional trader in the UK?

In most instances, professional traders have a portfolio size of £500,000+, have worked in financial services for 2+ years (involved in the trading / investing elements within that role) and / or have traded financial derivatives for the last 4 quarters. These are fairly stringent requirements as under FCA rules there are certain protections that are lost when you qualify and apply to become a professional trader.

What are the best professional trading accounts that don’t require a pro account?

Pepperstone is the best trading account for non-professional traders that want to access tight spreads without a professional trading account. They offer a Razor account where spreads start from 0.0 pips and only charge a £2.25 fixed commission each way, per trade.

Which professional broker is best for me?

If you are looking to trade stocks and ETFs, then IG is the best option, using their ProRealTime tools on a Standard or Professional Account. You can also get DMA access via L2 Dealer and Forex Direct which are application-only accounts.

If you are looking for automation capabilities and trading at high-volume, then Pepperstone’s Razor account offers Professional-level fees, without even needing a professional account tyope.

If you are looking for advanced level automation through Python, or are looking to trade primarily options, then Interactive Brokers is a great broker to look at.

Ultimately, there are lots of brokers that offer Professional accounts, or claim to be made for professionals, but only a small selection of brokers actually offer the account types, spreads, automation capabilities, professional charting tools and market depth to justify being included as a professional platform.
