1. IG: The Best Spread Betting Broker
IG: Huge Market Range
IG offers the most comprehensive list of spread betting options to trade. If you are looking for a one-stop shop, then this is your best bet.
69% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
Is IG a good spread betting broker?
IG has by far the most instruments to trade, with 16,000+ stock CFDs, ETFs, commodities, and forex pairs. This is the largest range of instruments to trade out of any spread betting broker.
They offer the widest range of instruments: 16,000+ instruments as of 2026, and they even invented spread betting in 1974. They are suitable for beginners through to more advanced traders, offering several beginner platforms like TradingView and their native WebTrader. They also offer MT4 & MT5 integration for Metatrader fans.
They also offer a wide range of platform options: MT4, MT5, TradingView, and their own proprietary webtrader. This is perfect for beginners who may be looking for a simple setup, such as a webtrader or a TradingView option.

Also, as the inventors of spread betting, they may not claim they are exclusively dedicated to spread betting, but it’s a prominent part of their core offering alongside CFDs and ISAs. If you want to see a full IG review, we have one here.
Key Spread Betting FAQs for IG
Can you spread bet on IG?
Yes, IG is considered the best spread betting broker by Trading Brokers, Good Money Guide and Compare Forex Brokers. These publications all rank IG as the leading spread betting broker.
How many instruments can I spread bet on IG?
IG offers 16,000 instruments to spread bet, which is by far the largest number of any broker.
Does IG offer good spread betting options on mobile?
Yes, IG’s Webtrader is great on both mobile and desktop. Whilst not as good as SpreadEx for beginners, it does provide a great option for intermediate and advanced traders.
What are the costs of spread betting on IG?
Forex spreads start at 0.6 pips, which aligns with most major brokers. Indices & shares start from 0.1 pips and commodities from 0.3 pips. You can find better commodity spread pricing on Pepperstone, but otherwise, those spread costs roughly align with those of most major brokers.
My Experience
When we explored the spread betting options on IG, it was easy to use; they had the familiar points-based system for spread betting, and it’s literally three clicks away – from the sidebar, to the instrument, to the trade. Three clicks and a few numbers- that’s how quick it is to start trading (see the image below).

Onboarding is simple, and of course, with an FCA-regulated international broker, it was trustworthy. Enter a few details and send over a picture of your driving license for KYC, and you are in. Honestly, the whole process is super simple.
Summary
IG is the perfect spread betting broker for spread bettors looking for variety, education (IG Academy is one of the best educational resources for beginners), and low-spread stock trading costs. We would recommend trading indices & stocks rather than forex or commodities, where CMC and Pepperstone are better, respectively.
Verdict
IG is a leading spread betting broker for a reason. They provide the widest range of assets, and they set the benchmark for spread costs for UK traders. Only a few other brokers beat them on spreads, and no one matches them for asset range.
Risk warning: Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 68% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider. They also provide extremely tight spreads on commodities, with Gold spreads starting from 0.1 pip spreads. (see below). When we tested this in cTrader and TradingView, we were deeply surprised not only by the cost but also by the execution speed (Pepperstone claims a 99.32% fill rate* & NDD).
* Fill rates are based on all trading data between 01/01/2026 and 31/03/2026

Pepperstone excels at commodities spread betting with spreads on Gold starting from 0.1 pips, which is the lowest in the industry. They are competitive on forex spreads, starting at 0.6 pips, in line with most major brokers, including IG and SpreadEx. Their index spreads, like S&P 500, start at 0.4 pips, which is higher than IG.
My Experience
We’ve been spread betting on Pepperstone for a long time now across both cTrader and TradingView. However, what surprised us was just how easy it was to get up and running. For this research, we opened a brand-new account and connected Pepperstone to TradingView, just like a beginner would, and the entire process after KYC took only 3 minutes (see screenshots below).

We simply selected the Pepperstone icon in the broker selection tool within TradingView and were taken to the screen where we could integrate our account.

Spread betting through Pepperstone on TradingView was great – they appeared for a wide variety of instruments, and it was even better on the Razor account where we got the tightest entries thanks to their commission-based account and pip spreads starting from 0.0 pip spreads.
Summary
Pepperstone is best for traders looking to trade Gold (their cheapest commodity price for spread bettors) as well as forex pairs (0.6-pip spreads, in line with other major brokers). Whilst their indices pricing is higher than other brokers like IG, and their stock range might not be as extensive, they appeal to spread bettors through fast execution, great beginner support and the option to trade with some of the lowest spreads in the industry with their Razor account, which offers 0.0 pip spreads.
Verdict
Choose Pepperstone if you are primarily a commodities and forex trader looking for tight spreads or beginner support. Pepperstone is also a fantastic broker for professional spread betting.
Risk warning: Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 72.9% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
3. SpreadEx: Best for Mobile Trading & Stocks
SpreadEx offers a unique combination of some of the best spread betting platform options. They offer TradingView support for beginners and provide the best proprietary mobile and desktop trading app for spread betting (the app feels like an upgrade to MT4). They also offer 10,000+ instruments to spread bet, including thousands of stocks and forex pairs. They have low fees, starting at 0.6 pips on forex (in line with IG & Pepperstone).
SpreadEx: Best for Mobile Trading & Stocks
If you are new to spread betting, then you can’t get much better than one of the most secure, highly regulated brokers in the UK.
61% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
Is SpreadEx a good spread betting broker?
SpreadEx is the best spread betting broker for mobile trading and offers one of the best desktop trading applications for stock trading, with icon-based navigation that makes it easy to find and start trading stocks across multiple markets.
They provide an easy-to-use dashboard platform and mobile application for beginners, offer comprehensive support through their detailed Education Hub and provide Trading Signals, a brilliant technical analysis charting tool built into their platform.
Key Spread Betting FAQs for SpreadEx
What can you spread bet on SpreadEx?
SpreadEx actually offers one of the widest ranges of instruments (10,000+) so you can spread bet all the trading staples like forex, commodities, stocks and indices, but they also offer more complex instruments like ETFs, bonds, and interest rate instruments. They are one of the most comprehensive brokers for spread betting.
How many instruments can I spread bet on SpreadEx?
SpreadEx offers 10,000+ instruments to spread bet for UK traders.
Does SpreadEx offer good spread betting options on mobile?
SpreadEx was our favourite desktop trading platform for stocks and our favourite mobile platform. The integration of Trading Signals, a technical charting tool, enables spread bettors to see potential trading setups at a glance. Their mobile platform had easy navigation options and felt polished (see images below).
What are the costs of spread betting on SpreadEx?
Forex spreads start from 0.6 pips on EURUSD, in line with other brokers on this list. Indices start from 0.3 pips on the Russell, and 0.4 pips on the S&P 500, in line with Pepperstone. Commodities start from 0.3 pips, in line with IG’s spread but more expensive than Pepperstone.
My Experience
When you first open the SpreadEx platform, you are greeted by what is arguably one of their best features, Trading Signals. This is a great way for beginners to quickly dive into markets and explore what to trade. This appears on both their desktop and mobile platforms (see below).

The platform is polished, featuring risers and fallers, upcoming earnings stocks, as well as complex derivatives such as bonds, options, and interest rates. The instrument variety is expansive, but the platform feels neat and organised. The same applies to their mobile trading app.

Where SpreadEx has an edge over most other brokers is in their stock trading. The pricing is low, starting at 0.1% with different point maximums (5.5pts for Apple in 2026), which is almost the same as IG for most major UK & US instruments (see below).

Their navigation is also arguably easier than IG’s, with simple flag icons denoting which countries’ stocks you want to trade, making finding instruments a breeze and navigating their huge stock library quick and painless.

Summary
SpreadEx is a broker that surprises for many reasons; they offer a wide variety of instruments (10,000+), with a significant presence in bonds, interest rates, stocks, ETFs, commodities, forex, and the traditional trading staples.
They are equally competitive with IG for spread-betting stock pricing (at a headline rate); they match Pepperstone and IG on forex spread-betting spreads, and whilst they are more expensive than Pepperstone for commodities trading, they equal IG for both commodity and index spread-betting pricing.
But ultimately, where Spreadex shines is in their platform trading experience, especially for stocks, complex derivatives and mobile trading. They offer an easy-to-navigate platform, which is a challenge given the range of assets, and they stand out for their Trading Signals feature on both mobile and desktop.
Verdict
I would choose SpreadEx if you are looking to spread bet UK & US stocks, especially on mobile. They offer a range of more complex derivative products, over 10,000+ instruments and an easy-to-use proprietary platform.
Risk warning: Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 61% of retail investors lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
4. CMC Markets: Best for Forex Variety
CMC: Award-Winning Platform Experience
There is a lot of contention about CMC’s platform – even here at Trading Brokers, their platform is very marmite, but for spread betting it works wonderfully.
83% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
Is CMC Markets a good spread betting broker?
Yes, CMC is fundamentally a British broker. They provide deep spread betting and CFD trading expertise, and offer the second largest range of instruments to spread bet out of any UK broker – with 13,000+ instruments to trade.
Not only do they have an exceptional range of instruments, but their recently released Spectre account in 2026 combines investing and spread betting – offering a tax-free account that doesn’t offer leverage – so for those more wary of trading or spread betting with leverage, but still want to get the tax-free benefits – this is one of the best products out there.

CMC is fast approaching becoming one of the best spread betting brokers in the UK, and their release of Spectre is evidence that CMC is committed to spread betting long into the future. You can check out a Spectre account here or read a full CMC review.
Key Spread Betting FAQs for CMC
What can you spread bet on CMC?
CMC provides 13,000+ instruments to trade, including complex derivatives such as bonds, treasuries, and interest rate instruments, as well as stocks, commodities, ETFs, and forex. Ultimately, where their advantage lies is in the 300+ forex pairs available. They appeared to offer the widest range of exotic, major, and minor forex pairs in our testing of the best TradingView brokers.
Is Spectre Different to Next Generation?
Spectre is not only a new spread betting account type but also a brand-new platform experience. It’s much simpler, easier to use and has a clean design. The core difference between them is that Spectre offers spread betting without leverage, something more akin to investing, but with the advantage of the profits being tax-free.
What are the costs of spread betting on CMC Markets?
Index pricing for spread betting starts at 0.5 pips for the S&P 500, more than any other broker on this list. They also offer forex pricing from 0.6 pips, in line with other brokers. Commodities start at 0.2 pips for Gold, which is still higher than Pepperstone’s but lower than SpreadEx’s and IG’s.
Which is better for beginners, Spectre or Spread Betting?
Spectre is a form of spread betting but without leverage, so a standard spread betting account is the better option for newer traders.
Is CMC spread betting beginner-friendly?
Their Next Generation platform is not very beginner-friendly, as it may be a bit confusing, but Spectre, their new account type, is much simpler.
Is IG better than CMC for spread betting?
Yes, IG is better than CMC for spread betting overall. IG offers more instruments to trade.
Spectre Account Review for Spread Betting
We tried both the Spectre account and the conventional spread betting account, and, since we’ve used CMC for a while, it was relatively quick; in fact, quicker than IG to place a trade on their Next Generation platform. However, for beginners it may take a bit of getting used to…

However, what really impressed us is Spectre. Imagine all the annoying bits from Next Generation, all the stuff you might not like – like tab limits, confusing layouts, etc. Well… CMC has listened. Not only that, they have improved. Here are some screenshots of Spectre.

The platform opens, and you get to choose a layout – brilliant for beginners and people new to the platform.
You then get to choose your preferred asset class – if you’re unsure what you prefer to trade, visit our Beginner’s Guide article, where you have a video, and it helps you understand what kind of trader you are.

You are then greeted by a much cleaner UI than Next Generation – the platform seems intuitive and clean – all the best bits of Next Generation but made simpler. You still get the familiar £/pt (pounds per point) layout, as you have with most spread betting accounts, but this felt clean and refreshing, yet familiar.

Overall, we found Spectre to be an improvement over CMC’s Next Generation platform. It is not only significantly better for beginner traders but also provides a much nicer trading experience. It felt less like Microsoft Word, and more like Apple Pages. This experience alone is enough to secure CMC’s place as one of the best spread betting brokers in the UK.
Summary
Whilst CMC is clearly more expensive for trading indices, they are relatively competitive for forex and commodities. They offer a unique account type in Spectre: a no-leverage account, which is great for HNW individuals or family offices. Their platforms are not particularly beginner-friendly, but they offer a great alternative to some of the brokers on this list.
Verdict
Choose CMC if you are looking for a broker that provides a wide range of forex minor and exotic instruments, or a low-cost commodities broker (second after Pepperstone) or if you need a tax-free, unleveraged account type like Spectre.
Risk warning: Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 68% of retail investor accounts lose money when spread betting and/or trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets, CFDs, OTC options or any of our other products work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
How to Choose a Spread Betting Broker?
Since our acquisition of spreadbet.ai this year, Trading Brokers is now the UK’s leading site for forex brokers, trading platforms and spread betting brokers in the UK. This is the best place to start to find FCA-regulated spread betting brokers.
What to look for in a spread betting broker?
The things you need to be aware of when looking for a broker are:
- Regulation: You are looking for FCA-regulated spread betting brokers; that’s crucial.
- Not Gambling Companies: Whilst spread betting is legally classified as gambling by the UK tax office, in practice it is more akin to trading, and several major trading brokers, such as CMC and IG, offer spread betting. There is no need to go with a smaller, less regulated gambling site that also offers trading anymore.
- Range of Instruments: What you can trade is very important; look for brokers with a wide range of instruments and low spread costs.
Of course, mobile trading, customer service support and educational materials are as important for spread betting as they are for trading – that’s why we’ve ranked the best trading brokers on our homepage so you can quickly review all the best brokers for all of these features.
Brokers to Avoid
If you are spread betting in the UK, there are some brokers you have to avoid; this, of course, starts with non-FCA-registered brokers. Always use the FCA checker (see this article for more information) to validate whether the broker you are reviewing is FCA-regulated or not. We will keep this page updated with a list of companies to avoid based on reviews and feedback we hear.
FAQ’s
What is the best spread betting broker for beginners?
The best spread betting broker for beginners is SpreadEx. Their platform, available on both mobile and desktop, offers the easiest way to start trading. They also have built-in Trading Signals that allow beginner traders to evaluate emerging opportunities using technical indicators.
What is the best spread betting platform for professionals?
For professional traders, Pepperstone offer the most comprehensive combination of low forex spreads, low commodities spreads, and great execution speeds & fill rates (99.32% – fill rates are based on all trades data between 01/01/2026 and 31/03/2026). SpreadEx and IG offer the widest range of complex derivatives such as interest rate, bonds and ETF options, and CMC is a notable mention in this category.
What is the best spread betting broker for high-volume trading?
It depends on whether you are looking to trade high volume on particular instruments. Our preferred option for high-volume trading is on our high-volume brokers page.
What is the best spread betting broker for forex?
All brokers on this list offer spreads from 0.6 pips on forex, so it depends which you prefer. If you are looking at forex brokers with the widest variety, CMC offers the widest range. If you are looking for low-cost forex trading, Pepperstone offers the best option with their Razor account. If you are just getting started, SpreadEx might be the best option.
What is the best spread betting broker for day trading / active trading?
If you are actively trading or day trading, you will ideally need to pay more attention to pip spreads rather than swap pricing. Overall, the cheapest broker on aggregate is IG, with spreads of 0.6 for forex (in line with most major brokers), 0.2 for indices and stocks.
What is the best spread betting broker for MetaTrader (MT4/5)?
Pepperstone & IG are the only spread betting brokers on this list that offer both MT4 and MT5. CMC only offers MT4; SpreadEx doesn’t offer MT4. Our preferred MT4 broker would be IG due to the sheer number of assets to spread bet.
What is the best spread betting broker for TradingView?
All brokers on this list provide TradingView access/integration. IG offers the best options for the number of things to spread-bet. In terms of pricing, for commodities, it would be Pepperstone; for stocks, either SpreadEx or IG; for forex, either Pepperstone or CMC; for indices, best through IG.
Is spread betting tax-free?
Yes, spread betting in the UK is tax-free. This is due to its classification as gambling by HMRC. However, in practice, spread betting is more like trading than gambling; you review charts, place trades, and exit them in the same way as you would in trading. Major FCA-regulated brokers like IG and CMC also offer spread betting options.
What’s the difference between spread betting and trading?
The main difference is the tax treatment: spread betting is not subject to capital gains tax. However, another difference is that spread betting is traded by £/pt (£pounds-per-point) whereas trading is often denoted in lot sizes (for forex) or units for stocks. This difference may confuse some beginners.
What spread betting brokers did you consider?
There are many companies, including TradeNation, Capital.com & Interactive Brokers. Still, some brokers receive a lot of media attention and often appear on top-10 lists, but are worse than IG, SpreadEx, Pepperstone, and CMC because they do not offer as many instruments or provide a poor spread betting experience.
Does Trading 212 offer spread betting?
No, Trading 212 doesn’t offer spread betting. However, some great FCA-regulated spread betting alternatives can be found on our site (Trading Brokers), including IG, Pepperstone & SpreadEx, and CMC. The most similar to Trading212 that offers spread betting is SpreadEx. They offer an intuitive mobile trading experience.
Does eToro offer spread betting?
No, eToro doesn’t offer spread betting. If you are looking for a copy-trading spread-betting broker, the best option is Axi. They are FCA-regulated and offer both copy trading and spread betting, making them the best UK spread betting alternative.
Can you spread bet on TradingView?
Yes, you can spread bet on TradingView, but you have to choose a top-tier broker like IG, CMC, SpreadEx or Pepperstone that also offers their brokerage services on TradingView. Unfortunately, you cannot spread bet with a lot of brokers on TradingView simply because their brokerage doesn’t integrate with TradingView e.g.) Trading 212.
How do I know if my broker is legit?
If you are spread betting in the UK, there are some brokers you have to avoid; this, of course, starts with non-FCA-registered brokers. Always use the FCA checker to validate whether the broker you are reviewing is FCA-regulated or not.
Which Spread Betting Broker is Best for Me?
If you are looking for the best mobile spread betting experience, then choose SpreadEx. If you need a broker with the widest variety, choose IG. If you are looking to spread-bet forex, CMC offers the widest range of instruments. If you are looking to spread bet gold or commodities, then Pepperstone is the cheapest broker for gold spread betting. If you are looking to trade indices, then IG offers the most competitive pricing.
