What Makes a Good TradeNation Alternative?

TradeNations's 9 Instruments to Compare vs Competitor Brokers
TradeNation’s 9 Instruments to Compare vs Competitor Brokers

TradeNation is a broker that is, by no means, a ‘casual’ broker. They provide really competitive spreads, a great platform experience, and offer something no other broker has dared touch: fixed spreads. This means that finding an exact like-for-like competitor is difficult. They are also currently one of the top-rated brokers on TradingView (see below) with 4.8/5 stars.

TradeNation's 4.8/5 stars on TradingView
TradeNation’s 4.8/5 stars on TradingView

To assess which brokers make the best competitors/alternatives to TradeNation, we analysed brokers based on their spread cost, platform experience, spread betting offering, and overall instrument variety. We broke it down as follows:

TradeNation BenefitsCompetitor scoring criteria
Spread Cost / Fixed SpreadsHow does the platform compare on raw FX spreads?
Beginner-friendlyIs the platform easy to start trading or investing?
Platform ExperienceIs the platform easy-to-use, or do they provide easy-to-use integrations (TradeNation also integrates with TradingView & MT4)
Spread BettingDoes the broker offer spread betting? All others were excluded from our list.

Based on these scoring criteria, we narrowed our list to 3 brokers that excel, sometimes even beating TradeNation, on many of these criteria.

Best TradeNation Alternatives List

1. SpreadEx: Best TradeNation Alternative

If you are looking for some of the best features of TradeNation – tight spreads, great platform experience, spread betting and TradingView integration – then SpreadEx is your go-to. However, SpreadEx offers more instruments (10,000+ vs TradeNation’s 1,000+) – this includes a wider range of stocks, ETFs, and even European-style options.

Best for Overall Alternative

SpreadEx: Great platform, huge instrument range and great alternative

SpreadEx has a wider range of instruments, a better platform experience and competitive spreads.

Spread bets and CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 61% of retail investors lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how spread bets and CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Pros

  • Great platform (includes TradigView).
  • Top-tier educational content.
  • 10,000+ instruments vs TradeNation’s 1,000+.

Cons

  • TradeNation spreads can be more competitive for some assets

Why SpreadEx is a Great TradeNation Alternative:

  • More Instruments to Trade
SpreadEx offers 10,000+ instruments, and TradeNation offers 1,000+. SpreadEx offers a huge range of stocks, ETFs and forex pairs to spread bet – significantly more than TradeNation.
  • Better Platform Experience & Mobile Experience
SpreadEx won Trading Brokers’ Best Mobile Platform award in 2026 for a reason. Their proprietary platform experience is fantastic (see below), easy to navigate, great for beginners, and excellent on mobile.
SpreadEx's Charting Capabilities

  • Education:
Whilst both SpreadEx and TradeNation cannot compete with IG Academy’s depth, SpreadEx offers a wider range of comprehensive education, including daily market updates, regularly updated beginner guides, and generally comprehensive beginner education.

SpreadEx vs TradeNation Spread Costs

TradeNation offers more competitive spreads on FX pairs, and some of the most competitive hands-down; they even beat CMC’s minimum FX spreads (TradeNation’s FX spreads start from 0.4 pip spreads and CMC starts from 0.5 pip spreads).

So, naturally, TradeNation beats SpreadEx & most other brokers across the majority of FX pairs too. TradeNation’s FX Spreads start from 0.4 pips, SpreadEx’s start from 0.6 pips (EUR/USD). On indices, SpreadEx’s pips start from 0.3 pips (Russell) and both TradeNation & SpreadEx offer equal S&P500 spreads (0.4 pips).

However, for Gold, SpreadEx offers more competitive spreads starting at 0.3 pips vs TradeNation’s 4-pip spreads.

Who Should Switch to SpreadEx?

  • Mobile traders
SpreadEx is one of the best spread betting brokers for mobile trading, offering Trading Signals that help guide beginners on technical analysis opportunities. Their platform is intuitive and easy to use.
  • More Experienced Traders:
SpreadEx offers European-style options trading, a wide range of ETFs, and stock trading options. SpreadEx is designed for more advanced traders, as evidenced by its vast range of assets.
  • Stock / ETF Spread Bettors
If you are looking to spread bet stocks or ETFs, then SpreadEx’s 10,000+ instruments are literally 10x TradeNation’s offering. There is really no competition when it comes to stock trading.

My Bottom Line on SpreadEx

Whilst TradeNation remains more competitive for spreads overall, SpreadEx provides a better platform experience across desktop & mobile; they also integrate with TradingView, like TradeNation, and they offer 10,000+ instruments vs TradeNation’s 1,000+. SpreadEx can be seen more as a ‘level-up ‘, not just an alternative / sideways move.

SpreadEx is a broker that just works. Easy to use, great professional feel and exceptional proprietary platforms.

2. CMC Markets: Best Forex Alternative

Now, whilst TradeNation is super competitive for spreads, there is one broker who comes close to matching, or even beating them, and that’s CMC Markets. With low spread betting costs, low holding costs, and their FXActive account, and over 21,000+ instruments across their spread betting offerings (Spectre + their standard spread betting account), these benefits make them a close competitor in forex trading.

Pros

  • Low Trading Fees
  • 12,000+ instruments vs TradeNation’s 1,000+
  • TradingView Integration

Cons

  • Platform can be tricky for beginners

Why Switch to CMC from TradeNation?

  • Trading & Investing platform
TradeNation does one thing, and does it well: fixed spread. CMC offers ISAs, SIPPs, dedicated FX trading accounts, spread betting and much more, including professional-style accounts. If you are looking for more than a broker, but an investment and trading partner, CMC Markets offers a wide range of options.
  • More Platform Options
CMC Markets integrates with TradingView and MT4, and has a proprietary platform. Whilst that’s nowhere near IG’s or Pepperstone’s platform range, it is certainly larger than TradeNation’s, which only offers TradingView and its own proprietary platform. So if you want EAs to help automate your trading, then CMC might be a better option.
  • Spreads
CMC Markets’ spreads are, and always have been, some of the most competitive around. So competitive in fact that TradeNation itself has not published a side-by-side broker comparison on their site (see below) as of September 2026. So let’s dig in here.

CMC vs TradeNation Spread Costs

CMC offers two main account types of note for comparison: their spread betting account – for a like-for-like comparison vs TradeNation (given they offer spread betting) as well as their FXActive account. Let’s first compare spread betting FX costs.

CMC spread betting forex costs start at 0.5 pips (see below). TradeNation’s FX costs start at 0.4 pips. For EUR/USD, both are equally competitive at 0.5 pips.

CMC Markets Spread Betting FX Costs (August 2026)
CMC Markets Spread Betting FX Costs (September 2026)

However, this is hardly the whole story. CMC also offers an FXActive account type. This account type offers a $2.50 each-way commission per $100,000 notional lot size. However, with this account, you can trade 6 major pairs (like EUR/USD, AUD/USD, etc.) from 0.0 pips and get a 35% discount on all other forex pairs. This means that trading at 0.6 pips becomes trading for 0.45 pips on some more exotic pairs, which becomes equally, if not more, competitive on spreads than TradeNation across several exotic or minor forex pairs.

CMC’s FXActive Account Type

Who Should Switch to CMC

  • Want to Spread Bet More Instruments
CMC offers 21,000+ spread betting instruments across their standard spread betting account and Spectre account types. This makes it significantly better than TradeNation’s 1,000+ instruments – you can also spread bet without leverage using Spectre and have access to thousands of stocks, ETFs and complex instruments unavailable on TradeNation.
  • Active/advanced traders
CMC has some of the most competitive spreads in the industry,
starting from 0.5 pips on EURUSD. This is actually further enhanced when you get to the FXActive account, so for more active traders, CMC’s FXActive account provides a better cost-effective option.
  • Traders who want to manage ISA & SIPP investments
CMC offers more than just a trading platform. They offer SIPPs, ISAs, and other investment vehicles for UK traders, making them competitive with IG and offering more than TradeNation. Although this might not be a consideration for the average TradeNation spread bettor, it’s always nice-to-have.

My Bottom Line on CMC

CMC Markets offers more competitive spreads across minor and exotic forex pairs with an FXActive account. Whilst their standard spread betting account still doesn’t match TradeNation’s low fees, CMC Markets comes the closest in their standard spreads. Combine this with 21,000+ spread betting instruments across spread betting and Spectre, and you get a dedicated spread betting broker that makes for an excellent alternative if you are looking to trade more frequently.

Best for Forex Variety

CMC is a leading CFD & Spread Betting platform in the UK, founded in 1989, it is truly one of the oldest and greatest platforms for trading forex CFDs with the widest range of forex pairs of any major broker.

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 68% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

3. IG: Best Stock Trading Alternative

IG is one of the undisputed heavyweights in the trading space, and they also offer spread betting, competing directly with TradeNation. The difference is… IG invented it. So how does it compare with TradeNation in 2026? Well… pretty darn well. IG has 16,000+ instruments, an excellent beginner Academy, and enough platforms to make your head spin- and yes, including TradingView.

Best for Stocks

CMC: Best Stock Trading Alternative

IG’s sheer range of instruments, combined with their stock and ETF range, makes it a clear alternative.

68% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Pros

  • 16,000+ instruments to trade.
  • Award-winning platform.
  • TradingView integration.

Cons

  • Not really an alternative, more like a serious option.

Why Switch to IG from TradeNation?

  • More instrument options
Ig’s 16,000+ instruments vs TradeNation’s 1,000+ is really not a competition when it comes to asset variety. If you are looking to trade a wide range of instruments, such as stocks, ETFs, and forex exotics, IG or CMC is always a good choice.
  • More platform options
TradeNation offers TradingView, MT4, and their own platform. IG offers its own proprietary platforms: TradingView, MT4, MT5, L2 Dealer, and ProRealTime. If you are looking for expert tooling, check out IG. For a TradingView alternative, ProRealTime is a solid option.
  • Spread betting option
IG invented spread betting; there is no getting around it, and their spread betting account remains one of the most popular to this day. They offer a wide range of instruments that far outclass TradeNation. However, for spreads, IG has a bit of catching up to do…

IG vs TradeNation Spread Costs

Ig’s spread costs on forex start at 0.6 pips. TradeNation’s start at 0.4 pips. Indices spreads start at 0.1 pips on IG; TradeNation’s start at 0.4. IG’s commodities pricing starts at 0.3 pips, and TradeNation’s start at 0.6. See screenshots below for TradeNation spreads in September 2026.

TradeNation's Index Spreads
TradeNation’s Index Spreads

The headline figures indicate that IG wins on indices trading, but in fact, across the FTSE100 & Dow Jones (often called Wall Street 30), TradeNation is more competitive. On the S&P 500, IG is equally as competitive as TradeNation – both have fees of 0.4 pips (see below).

IG's Index Spreads

So ultimately, if you are looking at trading costs across the major instruments, TradeNation is actually more competitive. However, if you are looking to trade stocks, TradeNation spreads vary between 0.1% (in line with IG) and 4 pip spreads (see below)

TradeNation Spreads on Stocks

IG's 0.1% stock trading fee
IG’s 0.1% stock trading fee

Who Should Switch to IG

  • Niche Pair Traders (ETFs, Stocks & FX)
If you are looking for niche pairs and exotics, including stocks and ETFs, then IG offers a broader range of assets than TradeNation.
  • Stock Traders
IG has broadly some of the most competitive stock trading fees alongside SpreadEx. This makes it a great addition, as well as an alternative to TradeNation.
  • Traders who like platform experience
If you are looking to trade on TradingView, MT4, MT5, and even get custom tooling like ProRealTime, then IG is a great option.

My Bottom Line on IG

So IG makes for a good alternative, but not a great one. Spread cost comparisons show that IG might come close to TradeNation, but in reality IG is more expensive overall than TradeNation, except for stocks, where they have a dual advantage of a wider asset range and an equal cost profile across many stocks.

FAQs

What is the best TradeNation alternative?

SpreadEx is the best TradeNation alternative overall; they compete well across all fronts. Their native platform experience is excellent; they offer both spread betting and CFD trading like TradeNation; they offer 10x the number of tradable instruments (10,000+ vs 1,000+) and are equally competitive for S&P trading. Whilst they are slightly more expensive across forex spreads, they make for a great holistic alternative.

What broker has cheaper fees than TradeNation?

On a standard account, almost no broker has cheaper fees overall across major instruments. However, CMC’s FXActive account & Pepperstone’s Razor account both offer active and high-volume traders cheaper fees through commission-based accounts with low spreads. For traders with large accounts, this works out as cheaper than standard spread-based trading.

Is TradeNation a good broker for UK traders?

Yes, TradeNation is a great broker and is one of the highest-rated brokers on TradingView (4.8/5 stars) in September 2026. They also offer fixed fees that are actually genuinely competitive with major brokers. Their drawback is that the number of tradable instruments is lower than most other major brokers.

Is SpreadEx better than TradeNation?

It depends on what you value. If you value fixed low commissions, TradeNation is a better choice. If you value a great trading experience across mobile and desktop and a wide range of assets, then SpreadEx is the better option.

Is TradeNation good for beginners?

Yes, TradeNation is great for beginners who don’t want to worry about spreads (they are great), integrations (they offer a proprietary platform), or what instruments to trade (they offer all major instruments across asset classes). They are even suited to intermediate traders given their competitive spreads. But they do not offer advanced or high-volume trading options like commission-based accounts or DMA access, and they lack a full range of exotic FX pairs and stock/ETF variety that CMC and IG offer.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a direct TradeNation replacement, then in terms of fixed spreads, almost no other competitor exists. However, if you want to replace the tight spreads you have on forex pairs, then CMC’s FXActive account is a good option. If you are looking to trade more stocks, then SpreadEx or IG are good options. If you are looking for an alternative that offers a great mobile and desktop trading experience, SpreadEx is the best option.

  • Choose SpreadEx if you are looking to trade more instruments or want a great mobile trading experience.
  • Choose CMC if you want to trade forex and keep costs low (the FXActive Account is a good option).
  • Choose IG if you want to trade stocks and keep the same or a similar cost profile.

Ultimately, TradeNation proves itself a hard broker to beat on many fronts, but for more active traders or those with larger trading accounts, there are options.
